I felt helpless laying flat on the table, doctors talking in hushed whispers as they hovered around me. I gripped my husband’s quivering hand as he sat over me and sobbed. As the ultrasound wand circled my swollen belly I felt like a lab-rat being inspected from the inside out.
The pictures on the ultrasound screen spoke two different messages: one to the doctors of deformity, illness, malady, dysfunction; the other to me of a precious silhouette with hiccups, clinched fists, cute crossed legs, sweet nose.
The professionals started urging me to take the “best road”, to terminate the pregnancy and get on with life. A baby with Edward’s Syndrome has no hope for survival. They assured me abortion was my best option.
The doctors called my home. The geneticists called my home. Well meaning family called my home. Calling to tell me to take this “best road”.
A doctor told me that it would be hard on hospital staff emotionally to deal with my stillborn baby.
All this pressure was astounding. Married to a husband with a great job, in no medical danger but overrun with pressure to abort my baby. What must the pressure be like for the woman without all my comforts?
My heart breaks for those who found themselves in a tighter corner than mine and decided to abort. We live in a culture that is quick to yell how wrong abortion is (and it is), but lack merciful servants who help bind the broken hearts shred from it all.
But there is hope! This is Christ’s specialty! He sets the prisoner free! He brings complete healing, wholeness, and breaks the silence and lies that surround the abortion wounded heart.
Nearly 56 million babies have lost their lives in the United States since the 1973 Roe Vs Wade decision. Think of the size this way- 8 million live in New York City today, so 7 cities the size of NY have been wiped out.
Each of the 56 million children belonged to both a mother and father, men and women of all ages. Today these parents secretly suffer in silence. So many need to know they can live the abundant life found in Christ alone. -Karen Ellison
