Throughout the new year, The M.O.M. Initiative will be periodically sharing a Mentor Minute with M.O.M.. Sharing those teachable moments when we hear, see or experience something that can minister to moms, mentors or ministries.
Today’s Mentor Minute with M.O.M. comes from a trip I took to the store and a brief conversation I overheard between a mother and her daughter.
In just a few words, a sweet mom in the picture frame aisle had an opportunity to teach her children about patience, self control and stewardship. It’s a teachable moment I couldn’t help but share and give you an opportunity to turn it into a short table talk tip or Bible study with your children for later on that day.
Take a minute, watch the video and feel free to download the printable provided below.

Teachable Moments ~ Patience, Self Control, Stewardship
Daughter: “Mom, can we buy that? I really want one of those!”
Mom: “No sweetie. They have those at the dollar store. Why would we pay that much money for something we can get for a dollar?”
Lessons we can learn from one teachable moment:
Patience, self-control, stewardship
PATIENCE & SELF CONTROL
Look at Galatians 5:22-24 together:
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there.” (NLT)
- What fruit mentioned in these verses can be learned from the mother and daughter conversation above?
- Why was it good for the daughter to have self-control and patience so that she could buy what she wanted at the dollar store later, rather than going ahead and buying it for more immediately…and how can that help her in other areas? In her friendships? In school? In uncomfortable or difficult situations?
- How could she benefit from waiting until she could buy it for a dollar?
STEWARDSHIP
Read 1 Corinthians 4:2
“Moreover, it is required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.” (ESV)
- Why is it important that we see ourselves as stewards (managers) of what God has given us?
- How does it change our perspective about what we have when we realize it is God who has provided what we have?
- If we are wise with our finances, what are some other things we will be able to do as a result?
