Romans 8:37 is one of my favorite Bible verses: “We are more than conquerors through him who loved us.”
I love this verse because it makes me feel like I’m stepping into a boxing ring and guaranteed to win. (Totally a pipe dream, by the way, because I could never box. And if I did, I definitely wouldn’t win.)
Nonetheless, I love the verse because it pumps me up and makes me want to walk around with both arms up in the air like a champion.
The truth is, though, it’s not always easy to live out this verse. Being “more than a conqueror” doesn’t always come naturally to me, especially on days when life is hard.
Sometimes, it feels much more natural to be negative, whiny, or depressed.
So how do you live like the conqueror you are?
How to Be More Than a Conqueror:
-
Conquerors fight.
Maybe part of the reason we don’t feel like conquerors is because we never actually conquer anything.
We walk though life on easy street.
If something is hard, we avoid it. When a hard situation does come our way, we often get angry with God for allowing it.
We have to stop expecting life to always be easy. Jesus promised we would have troubles in this world. But he also promised he would be with us through them. And he promised he would help us conquer them.
So the next time something hard comes your way, fight. Fight for your faith. Fight for your values. Fight Satan.
Because the only way to be more than a conqueror…is to conquer something.
-
Conquerors don’t stuff their feelings.
People who walk through life with their heads held high and their shoulders back don’t do it by stuffing their feelings and pretending they never have bad things happen to them.
Instead, they do it by working through their emotions, fighting for their faith when times get hard, and coming out on top.
-
Conquerors find God in the midst of their hard situations.
It’s hard to see God sometimes.
This is especially true when pain, tears, or brokenness seem to cloud our vision.
But one thing I learned recently after going through a hard season of life is that God doesn’t leave us when the hard times come. He doesn’t see storms on the horizon and turn around running.
That might be what we would do…but it’s not what He does.
He sees the storm and runs toward it, instead of away from it.
Conquerors find Him in the storm. They search for His footprints, even when they might be hard to find. They search for Him for however long it takes to find Him there.
-
Conquerors forgive.
Conquerors also forgive. They forgive those around them who might have sinned against them, but they also forgive God.
When God doesn’t answer their prayers in the ways they wanted Him to, they forgive Him.
-
Conquerors move forward.
Conquerors don’t live in the past.
There’s a line in the movie The Lion King that I love. It’s the scene where the monkey is trying to convince Simba to return to his homeland. Simba shares that he’s afraid of going home because of the pain in his past. The monkey then says this, “The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it…or you can learn from it.”
Conquerors learn from their past and then move forward into their futures.
What else do you think makes someone “more than a conqueror”?

About Unbeaten:
Why does life have to be so hard? If you’ve ever asked this question, you’re not alone. Difficult times often leave Christians searching the Bible for answers to some of life’s most difficult questions.
Questions like:
Does God hear me when I pray?
Why isn’t He doing anything?
Does He even care?
In Unbeaten: How Biblical Heroes Rose Above Their Pain (and you can too), Lindsey Bell walks with readers through the stories of men and women in the Bible who went through difficult situations. In this 10-week Bible study and devotional, she addresses many of these questions and helps readers learn how they too can be unbeaten.
