Some people think that the purpose of life is solely to find happiness. But, if you are simply living life to find happiness, you won’t find it. Why not? Because it is fleeting. It’s here today, gone tomorrow like the carefree days of summer.
If you ask people what the purpose of life is, they might say to be happy. When in fact, true happiness and purpose can only come from our creator. Instead of focusing on finding happiness, try finding your purpose in Jesus Christ. When you find your purpose and realize how to serve Him, that gives your life direction and fullness.
God tells us to focus not on earthly things, but on things eternal. Romans 12:2 NIV speaks to this idea. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.”
Are you looking to buy your way into happiness by the next latest and greatest car, piece of clothing or pretty item of jewelry…think again. This type of thinking only leads to an endless lust for material possessions and comparisons to other moms. THINGS of this world will never make you truly happy.
“Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. 16 For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world” (1 John 2:15-16 NIV).
So how do you find your purpose in Christ?
Pray, spend time with Jesus, and examine your natural talents. What are you good at? What comes easily for you? Read scripture, focus on what God puts in your heart. Your purpose may not be something you think you want to do, but something God wants for you to do. Wait on God’s timing to show you His purpose. If you are not naturally athletic, then your purpose is not to be a coach or a professional athlete. Your purpose will be something you can just do because God gave you that gift and talent. But, you will have to work to develop that gift as well.
And here’s some tips from Pastor Rick Warren from his book The Purpose Driven Life.
- Realize first that this life isn’t about you. It’s about letting God use you for His purposes; not you using him for your own purposes.
- Remember that being successful and fulfilling your life’s purpose are not at all the same thing.
- Your identity and purpose will be discovered through your relationship with Jesus Christ.
- Knowing your purpose simplifies and focuses your life.
- Knowing your purpose prepares you for eternity.
- Life on earth is a test. That’s why we experience testing and storms in this life. Read the book of Job in the bible for more on this idea.
So, I say all of this to you because God really does have a purpose for each of our lives. And He will reveal that purpose to you when He is ready. So be prayed up and start listening…
Here are some questions to ask yourself about your purpose in Christ.
- What events in your life have hinted that you were created for a special purpose?
- What are your natural God-given talents?
- Is there anything you do that serves God that is so fulfilling that time seems to stop while you are doing it?
- Are you praying for God to show you His purpose? If not, start!
- Are there any past hurts or fears inside of you that need to be dealt with? These might be keeping you from His purpose in your life?
- Do you have an idea of how God wants to use you?
