Have you ever gotten that strange look or sly comment when you say you are a homeschooling momma?
Yup. I sure have. As a former middle and high school teacher with experience teaching at both public and private schools, I have firsthand experience of the ins and outs of our nation’s school system. If it works for your family, why not take the opportunity to ignore the masses and educate to your own drum? So here goes…
*You can create your own curriculum to suit what’s best for your child. You can avoid the cookie cutter schooling experience to meet state standards that are overly-generalized for the average student and created to match a standardized test.
*You can teach at your child’s speed so that he/she can really learn a concept.
*You can spend more time reviewing and practicing concepts your child struggles with.
*You can teach the Bible as part of your curriculum and have the chance to further disciple your child.
*You can make meaningful memories and experiences with your child by taking field trips that will further solidify the concepts your child is learning. Field trips give you a chance to go deeper into a concept while having fun at the same time.
*You can make education about learning, curiosity, experimentation and creativity rather than just memorization and learning to pass a test. Not all testing is bad, however, that SHOULD NOT be the focus of your child’s learning. You get to choose what tests your children take, and you can relieve test anxiety with overly-tested students.
*Your flexible school schedule will allow your child more time for art, music and computers, things that are often reduced at a typical school.
*You can integrate educational techniques, using traditional textbooks along with computers and iPad apps to create a well-rounded educational experience.
And if you are looking for a few Biblical reasons for further discipleship, here’s just a few of the many scriptures to guide you on your homeschooling journey.
Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it (Proverbs 22:6 ESV).
Hear, my son, your father’s instruction, and forsake not your mother’s teaching, (Proverbs 1:8 ESV).
Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children– (Deuteronomy 4:9 ESV).
