Moms welcome a new year with such good intentions for change, but before we even celebrate the birth of someone famous, we encounter confusion. Our plans to get up earlier, make our budget go further, and exercise longer fizzle out before the last Christmas clearance item disappears from back corner of Hobby Lobby. So many of our best plans depend on US, but we are, in truth, the same person we were when we hit the snooze button back in 2014. When my goals completely depend on ME, I’m destined to miss the mark. How can a mom be holy when she’s such a human?
As New Start 15 kicks off Week #2 of 3, we look to 1 Peter 1:13-25 for insight into God’s plan for our growth. The same Father who made us watching our wrestling, patiently watches as we make lists of resolutions and choose “one words,” and waits for us to come to Him in surrender. If our goals are so good, why do they seem so impossible?
I’m the biggest problem in my plan to become a godly mom.
Dear “biggest problem,” God loves you dearly. As His children, He knows we have a terrible habit of falling back into our old ways before we knew Him. He knows we become distracted by hoping in things (even good things) that won’t deliver the benefits of grace He longs to work out in our lives. And since He knows, He calls us out of our early-in-the-year-confusion to steer our thinking in the right direction. “Get serious,” He says. “Get ready,” He commands. Put all of our confidence in the grace that we live in now that will be FULLY delivered when He comes for us some day. Do all this out of obedience for one reason.
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:13-16)
We can confidently get ready, seriously ready, to walk in obedience to God’s ways, because He is holy. Everything good I’m called to be and do is based on God’s nature, not mine.
Human moms know this about holy moms
- Our holiness is expected, because He is holy.
- Our holiness is possible, because He is holy.
- Our holiness is something to hope for, because He is holy.
This new year, our one words, and our lists of goals are all about responding to God’s holiness. We can be holy moms because we serve a holy God.
