Do you ever worry about your children’s future?
The world is so unsettled right now. There is so much violence occurring on a daily basis. People are angry and confused. Everyone feels they have the right to believe whatever fits their fancy. No one has the right to tell someone else he is wrong. Children are indoctrinated with views that are contrary to God’s word. Many are falling away from the Biblical model that their parents provided for them. What will happen in fifty years when we are gone and they are left to fend for themselves? What will they face on a daily basis? What pressures will they encounter?
My grandfather was born in 1908. He was married in 1932 and had three children in the next few years. Over the course of his life, he lived through a number of wars and the inventions of the Model T, the motorized movie camera, the shortwave radio, and the microwave oven. He witnessed the Soviet revolution, both World Wars, the civil rights movement, a man walking on the moon, and so much more. Yet he could never have envisioned the things that we have and face today.
If my grandfather had known his children and grandchildren would have to deal with the post 9/11 realities with modern terrorism, a world without absolutes, and the intolerance of tolerance, he may have been tempted to succumb to fear. But John Thomson was a great man of faith. He trusted Someone greater than himself to care for his family. When he couldn’t foresee a dangerous future, he knew that the Almighty God could and that He never changes.
This same God who saw our lifetime and our challenges from afar also sees and knows the future of our children. He is never taken by surprise. He holds the nations in the palm of his hand. He has the authority to set up rulers and dethrone them according to His will. He has the power to protect, the wisdom to guide, and the ability to bring victory in the most difficult of circumstances.
There is no place that our children can stray from God’s Spirit. He will never leave them nor forsake them. If they follow Him He will be their guide and protector. If the world’s system sidetracks them He will patiently seek to bring them back. In the darkness of a fallen world, His light will still shine brightly, pointing the way to the truth. He saw our babies as they were being formed in our bodies and all the days of their lives have been written in His book. Nothing can happen that He does not allow.
There is no way to know what the future holds for our children, but we do not need to worry. You will leave them in good hands. The One who has faithfully walked with you through the past decades will continue the journey with your children when you are gone. If you are tempted to worry about what the future of an unsettled world holds, rely on God’s comforting word to calm your fears. Rest your heart and mind there today.
Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”
Psalm 139:17-18 “How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them! If I should count them, they would outnumber the sand. When I awake, I am still with You.”
Isaiah 26:3-4 “The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect peace, because he trusts in You. Trust in the Lord forever, for in God the Lord we have an everlasting Rock.”
1 Chronicles 29:11 “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all.”
Psalm 55:22 “Cast your burden upon the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never allow the righteous to be shaken.”
