It’s No Laughing Matter – God Always Has Our Best Interests at Heart

As I was preparing to write this study I asked God for guidance and He answered my prayer and gave me four words that help us better understand the life of Sarah. Those words are Beauty, Barren, Bitter and Blessed.

Please click on the IN-DEPTH STUDY (LEADERS’ GUIDE) PDF link, and the WORKSHEET FOR SMALL GROUP & DIGGING DEEPER and the YouTube video link to study and hear details of Sarah’s story. It is a story that many women can relate to.

Take a look at the four lessons we can learn from Sarah.

  1. BEAUTY

All women long to be told that they are beautiful. Sarah is described in scripture as “beautiful.”  So much so that she found favor because of it.

Abraham had to lie about his wife and tell others she was his sister because he feared for his life and was afraid Sarah would be taken into a pharaoh’s and a kings harem because of her beauty. (Genesis 12:10-20; Genesis 20:1-18)

He used her beauty for his protection.

Being “beautiful” doesn’t guarantee an easy life.

  1. BARREN

Sarah desired one thing – to have a child. Her barrenness caused deep anguish and soul wrenching pain. (Genesis 11:30)

The years and years of not being able to produce a child tore at her heartstrings. She had given up hope and thought it would never happen to her. Especially as she got older and passed her child-bearing years. Have you ever yearned for something and it doesn’t seem God is listening?

  1. BITTER

The longer she was barren, the bitterer she became. She had enough and decided to take matters into her own hands. She was frustrated, depressed, and angry. It was custom and acceptable in those days to allow a maidservant to become a surrogate mother for a childless couple. So Sarah devised a plan to have her maidservant, Hagar sleep with Abraham so a child could be born. (Genesis 16:1-3)

I can only begin to imagine the stress that put on relationships within her household.

  1. BLESSED

It wasn’t until she turned 90 that God answered her prayer and she became pregnant with her son Isaac – meaning: Laughter.

Prior to becoming pregnant Sarah had overheard that she would bear a son. Upon hearing that “she laughed” in disbelief and doubt. (Genesis 18:10-15)

She couldn’t believe that it was going to come true. As God asked her why she laughed, she denied that she did – “I didn’t laugh!”. But God confronted her of the lie and called her out saying: No! – You did laugh!

I am excited for you to dig deeper into the study of Sarah. You will be amazed at the similarities in your own life and how God intervened and answered prayer.

God will teach you and God will touch you as you spend time learning from scripture about Sarah’s life.

Enjoy!
