Not long ago, I was up early sitting on my back porch with my hot cup of coffee, my Bible and some praise music. I sat there that morning with great purpose. I needed to hear clearly from my Heavenly Father. I needed to feel His tender but firm embrace.
The first song on my praise list began to play …
Why should I feel discouraged, Why should the shadows come,
Why should my heart be lonely and long for Heav’n and home,
When Jesus is my portion? My constant Friend is He;
His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me,
I’ve known that song since I was a young girl, and I’ve sung it many dozens of times. But, that morning I found indescribably comfort in those words.
Luke 12:6 says “Aren’t five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten in God’s sight. Indeed the hairs of your head are numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”
Jesus could have used any bird or animal to illustrate His point. But, He chose a sparrow. A bird whose value is less than a penny. YET … not one of these inexpensive, insignificant birds are forgotten by God, and He even says, not only are you of more value than these tiny sparrows, whom I care for, I know exactly how many hairs are on your head.
This is God’s intimate love and provision for you and me! No matter where you are or what you’re going through God has not forgotten you! He is intricately weaving every sorrow and joy, every moment of obscurity, every pain and triumph into the tapestry of your life.
And even if that tapestry doesn’t look too beautiful right now, it will!
Do you feel invisible? You are NOT forgotten.
Do you feel alone? You are NOT forgotten.
Are you in pain? You are NOT forgotten.
Are you in despair? You are NOT forgotten.
Are you struggling in your marriage? You are NOT forgotten!
Do you have a prodigal child? He/She is NOT forgotten.
Sweet Mom, YOU are not forgotten!
Do you believe this? Do you trust it is true?
Psalm 33:13 says “The eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him – those who depend on His faithful love.” The word “eye” in this verse is used in an emphatic position literally emphasizing God’s close watch on His people. The same use of the word “eye” is found in Psalm 34:15 where the Psalmist declares, “The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and His ears are open to their cry for help.”
I want to close with a portion of this beautiful song, “His eye is on the sparrow.” Soak in the Truth for a moment and don’t forget for one moment how much you matter to your Abba Father. Remember that nothing you are going through right now, no matter how great or small, has gone unnoticed by God!
