Ever feel inadequate as a mom? Ever wondered why the mom you thought you would be – the mom you wanted to be – was very different from you are?
Motherhood is so fluid. Just when you feel like you get one stage down, they grow up a little and everything changes and then you’re left wondering what to do next.
Ever felt like that? Me too!
That’s one of the reasons I wrote The Making of a Mom! Because I don’t think any mom should have to go it alone and I don’t think any mom should feel like a bad day makes her a bad mom. And I definitely know we are all better together.
For me, The Making of a Mom was specifically written to serve moms, and the body of Christ, and this culture. It’s an all-in-one resource for moms, mentors and ministry leaders and when used in tandem with The M.O.M. Initiative it is a great way for the church to not only minister to moms who know Christ, but to reach moms who don’t.
Being in ministry, I know resources can be expensive… SO, with The Making of a Mom, ministry leaders are able to use one book to help them begin or expand their mentor, and/or moms and single moms ministries and moms are able to discover real, practical help for real every day life.
The 12 chapters and their descriptions are listed below and you can CLICK HERE to check out the first chapter.
There are questions at the end of each chapter for a mom to read through and reflect on her own journey. And those same questions also are tools in the hands of mentors and small group leaders.
And there are planning guides for various venues that will help you begin a M.O.M. Group in your church and your community.
Chapter 1 – Not Alone ~
Feeling Alone. It is one of the biggest struggles busy mothers face. But you don’t have to do the ‘mom’ thing alone. In fact, we weren’t meant to. In Not Alone, you will discover why other mothers feel the same way you do and how you can find freedom in the beauty of taking your mom journey in community with other moms.
Chapter 2 – It’s a Beautiful Life ~
How does a mom stay focused on God’s plan and purpose for her precious little one when her days are filled with endless piles of laundry, dried spaghetti sauce in the carpet and temper tantrums in the produce section of the grocery store? Whether you are just beginning her journey through pregnancy or you are seeing your children off to school, It’s a Beautiful Life uses stories and biblical insight to help mothers consistently embrace the beautiful truth that her child is a masterpiece, carefully crafted by the Creator of the universe…a Divine design…intentionally shaped by the heart of God-and so is she.
Chapter 3 – A Different Me ~
The moment a baby is conceived, a mother is also born and everything changes. Whether she is a young teen mom who is struggling to step into her new identity or a corporate business woman trying to juggle her new life as mom, A Different Me incorporates real life stories which will help mothers understand why life as they once knew it has been forever altered. A Different Me will also provide moms with the necessary tools to deal with the emotions and the questions that are sure to come.
Chapter 4 – How Do I Love Thee ~
Love is so much more than a four letter word with a two word definition, but what does that look like when it’s more than a warm fuzzy feeling or words on a page? In this chapter, we will explore the concept of love and learn what it does and does not mean to love our children well.
Chapter 5 – May I Have Your Attention ~
How does a mom know whether she is giving her kids too much or not enough attention? How can moms create a healthy balance between too much and not enough attention when real life can be so messy? May I Have Your Attention helps mothers find the balance between giving their children the attention they need to develop a proper view of themselves while avoiding the dilemma of creating self-centered children and child-centered homes.
Chapter 6 – Speaking Words of Wisdom ~
“Cindy! Why don’t you ever do what you’re told?” Children are exposed to all sorts of comments. Words that wound. Comments that cut. Yet, no words have more impact than those of a mother. Unfortunately, moms don’t always say the right things either. Hormones rage, tempers flare and words don’t always come out right. Speaking Words of Wisdom will help mothers gain the proper perspective of the power of their words while challenging them to think before they speak. This chapter is chock-full of practical word choices that will speak life rather than death into a child’s life.
Chapter 7 – Character Counts ~
With our morals currently being defined by shows like Here Comes Honey Boo Boo and Pretty Little Liars, it is becoming increasingly difficult to teach our kids what it means to live lives of moral character. Character is defined as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. It’s something that is caught much more than it is taught. While friends may test the character of a child, it is the mother who molds it. Character Counts will highlight specific character traits and offer practical teaching tips. It will also emphasize the responsibility a mother has to be the kind of woman she hopes her children will be.
Chapter 8 – Overwhelmed ~
How ironic! We live in a world with tons of gadgets designed to make our lives easier, yet the only thing that seems to come easily is the tendency to feel overwhelmed. Life can be daunting and being a mom isn’t easy. It’s hard to deal with the dailies of mommyhood when you’re trying to be all and do and finding yourself overwhelmed by it all. Motherhood is messy, but it can be the most beautiful mess you ever imagined. Discover joy in your messy mom journey, escape the pressures of being a perfect parent or trying to be like other moms, and embrace the reality that you’re not in this mom thing alone.
Chapter 9 – Setting Goals ~
Have you ever wondered why we set goals for everything but parenting? If our goal for our children is that they will grow up to love God, be good and godly spouses, caring and compassionate people, and diligent workers, then wouldn’t it be wise for us to chart a course in that direction and work on specific goals? There is no greater endeavor than that of molding the heart of a child. But how does a mother know if she is making progress in her attempts to cultivate her child’s heart? Setting Goals will not only help mothers discern the effectiveness of their parenting in four key areas of their lives. Spiritually, emotionally, educationally and relationally, but it will also help moms to teach their kids how to set goals for themselves.
Chapter 10 – Imprints Moms Make ~
Moms leave their imprints on just about everything they touch. Their husbands, their homes, their family, their friends, their projects, the events their involved with, and most of all on their children’s hearts. Using the Proverbs 31 woman as the model, Imprints Moms Make will help moms discover their own uniqueness and the power of their influence, as well as helping them in foue key areas where their imprint will be felt most.
Chapter 11 – Always a Mom ~
Parenting is rarely easy, but just when a mom thinks she has figured out how to mother her toddler, the sands of time shift and she has to learn how to parent a kindergartener. Navigating the ever changing tide of time makes it hard for a mother to get a grip on parenting. Friends may come and go during the course of a child’s life, but a mom is always a mom. Always a Mom takes mothers on a journey through the various stages of a child’s life and clarifies her role along the way. This chapter is woven with real stories and biblical insight that will equip moms to pave the way for a lifelong relationship with the children in whom they have poured their lives.
Chapter 12 – Parenting from Your Knees ~
Mom. A child’s biggest cheerleader and most relentless prayer warrior. No one will ever want as much for her children as she does and no one will ever pray for them like she will. Using stories of real moms (some who have gone before us, others who are modern day moms), Parenting from Your Knees will not only inspire mothers to see the significance of their consistent prayers for their children, but also provide them with specific prayers using the Word of God to claim His promises and to intercede in specific areas for their kids.
Intentionally written as an in-reach and an outreach resource, The Making of a Mom includes questions at the end of each chapter and venue specific planning guides in the back.
The Making of a Mom answers the three questions almost every mentor, ministry leader, and small group leader asks…
1. What will I say? (The questions at the end of each chapter serve as a catalyst for conversation.)
2. What will I do? (The venue-specific planning guides in the back of the book provide the tools to mentor moms in your church, your home, and in your community.)
3. What will I use? (The Making of a Mom is a dual-purpose book to reach moms who don’t know Christ and minister to the ones who already know Him.)
If you’re a mom, this is a MUST READ! If you’re a ministry leader or small group leader, this is the resource you’ve been waiting for!
The Making of a Mom was not only written so moms wouldn’t feel alone, but as a resource for the church so they wouldn’t have to be.
