Even Moms Need More Sleep

And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done,

and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. Genesis 2:2 ESV

She’s here, she’s there, she’s everywhere. You’re the mom, which means you are always on the go: groceries, diapers, and carlines are a part of your everyday world and somewhere in the chaos of it all we’ve bought into the lie that we’ve got to be some kind of supermom.  You know, faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than…oh, who are we kidding, we’re not super mom, nor should we try to be.

As moms we are so used to going, doing and being for so many other people that most of us don’t stop long enough to realize that we need to take care of ourselves just as much as we care for the rest of our family.

So we skip a little sleep here and there all in an effort to get more things done, then we spend the next few days completely dragging from our lack of sleep. It turns into a hard to break and not so fun cycle that’s hard to change.

Here’s what that cycle looks like;

  • You stay up late (getting things done),
    • Which leads you to get up late,
      • Which leads you to crank up the caffeine the next day,
        • Which leads you to rush around frantic because you’re all hyped up on caffeine,
          • Which makes you generally cranky, irritable, and hard to deal with,
            • Which ultimately spills out on everyone in your family,
              • Which then leads to huge feelings of guilt.

How many of us have lived that very day?

I know I have, especially when my kids were little. I never seemed to get enough done and consistently lived in that cycle. If only I had started to listen to my body and realize that what I needed more than anything was sleep.

Did you know that the word “Rest” is in the ESV Bible 521 times.  Yep, five hundred and twenty one times…don’t you think that God is trying to tell us something?

Let’s face it, when we take time to take care of ourselves by getting a good night’s rest we are better able to be used to love on, care for and serve our families.  Take it from a mama who has older kids now, those years go by way too quickly.

Enjoy every minute of it. Be fully present in your everyday life. Make it a priority to get in bed on time, or better yet, even a little earlier than normal.  Get the amount of sleep that your body requires, not what you think, not what other’s get, but the amount that makes you feel like you are ready to take on the world.

Let my soul be at rest again, for the Lord has been good to me. Psalm 116:7 ESV

When you do you will be able to focus better, be more productive, and be a better vessel for God to use.  You never know who God might bring across your path each and every day and you want to make sure that you are God’s BEST for His glory….so, go on now, get some sleep!

What about you…

Can you relate to the not getting enough sleep cycle?

What are some other ways you can get some rest?
