The movie God’s Not Dead opens in theaters today. Just because it’s a story about God, is it a fit for your family? When I attended a preview of the movie, dear moms, I watched and listened with you in mind. Read on to find out what the movie is all about, how realistic it is, what age group this film targets, and who else in your life might just need to see this movie.
God’s Not Dead leads audiences to consider how far we would go to defend our belief in God. Better yet, it challenges us to answer whether or not we believe there IS a God. Set on a college campus, the story unfolds as Christian student Josh signs up for a Philosophy class, only to find out that his professor vehemently hates God. Josh is asked to do what so many of us imagine: stand alone for our faith.
Since I make my hometown in a university city and have a college student and high school student who have navigated public education, I can say this plot is completely realistic. In fact, the classroom setting stirred up my own memories as a student in a large public school. Even outside of traditional classrooms today, kids are growing up in a world that hates God. This movie portrays a realistic scenario of life in the world that all followers of God can envision.
“But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” (1 Peter 3:15 ~ NIV)
Due to the nature of the intellectual content, this God’s Not Dead movie is ideal for students in the range of 13 to 22, because it speaks to where they are. Younger tweens and kids would probably be lost in some of the intense dialogue, but they would still glean some of the larger themes. No graphic scenes or language are included or distracting. We previewed the movie with two 16 yr old boys who gave it their unedited opinions when it was done: “Wow! That was awesome!” Their response confirmed that God’s Not Dead succeeds in challenging the next generation with the need to defend their faith in an opposing world.
