A Mother’s Song of Praise

Spread the love

I’ve always loved the prayer Mary prayed after she visited her cousin Elizabeth and revealed the secret that would change the world, she was carrying in her womb the Son of God, the Messiah, the one who would save us from our sins.

When I read Luke 1:46-56 I imagine Mary in such a humbled state yet not able to contain her excitement and fear for her future as the mother of the promised one.  I can see her dancing as she sings, kneeling as she prays and lifting her hands towards Heaven in worship.  I just cannot imagine what all must be going through her mind as she tries to process all that is about to happen.  Her prayer speaks volumes about her and what kind of young woman she was and she is the kind of mom I want to be.  The kind who understands she did nothing to deserve the honor given to her, gives all praise and honor to God for not just her existance but for the position given her, and the kind of woman who loves her God to the point of her love lasting generation after generation through her children.

I have taken Mary’s song of Praise and inserted my own prayer in.  This is a powerful prayer to pray as a mom and I believe there is great benefits to praying God’s word back to Him.

Mary’s Song of Praise: The Magnificat

And Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord,

From the deepest part of my inner being I am in awe of your bigness and ability to accomplish more than I could even imagine.

and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

The joy that fills my heart cannot be accurately expressed.  I am gushing with joy for my God my Savior!

for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.

Who am I?  I am nobody that you would choose me to have the honor of being a mother.

 For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

I pray my children and children’s children for many generations will come to know you as I do.

for he who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is his name.

Your strength and might enable me to be the mother you called me to be and for this I praise your holy name!

And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.

I ask mercy on my children as they learn to love you.

He has shown strength with his arm; he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;

Keep me from stumbling into pride, thinking I can mother my children on my own. Give me strength and faith to rely on you completely.

 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones and exalted those of humble estate;

Humble me oh God, keep my heart in tune with your desires.

he has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty.

Thank you for your provision and may we never forget who is the Provider of all.

 He has helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy,

Please help me to never forget your mercy and grace in our family and on our nation.

as he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his offspring forever.”

As you have spoken to those who have gone before us, Oh God make your voice heard in my life that my face will always be turned toward you in fear and love.

Amen
