Her smile.
I did it to see her smile and it worked. We laughed together and ran – inside the house. And the broken parts mended a bit.
Sometimes life raising kids feels heavy. It is a huge responsibility. I am so serious about the principles I want them to learn and the tasks they need to accomplish that I can forget something important.
Laughter and joy are just as important to teach as a good work ethic.
Let me say that again. Kids need to learn the art of enjoying life, of laughing, of the joy of the Lord from us.
So it is ok to engage in a tickle fight or laugh at ourselves or even chase each other around the house some. It is good to laugh at the ridiculous and make funny faces to lighten a mood.
There is something about shared laughter that mends things. Heals breeches created in the day-to-day discipline of raising kids.
Laughter is a salve that heals wounds, binds us together, and changes our perspective.
I feel the healing in my battered heart and see it in her eyes. And then she says it…
“You are the best mom ever!”
I don’t deserve that title, but I cherish it.
And I pray we will laugh together often and for many more years to come.
