Simple Mentoring – You Can Do It!

Spread the love

womensministryDo you have that “older woman” who touches your life deeply, without much fan fare or notice to the rest of the world?

I remember her well; her name was Connie. She was the “older women” in our women’s group at the small church I attended in West Virginia over a dozen years ago.

Older meant she was in her late 40’s, while the rest of us were in our 20’s and 30’s. Older meant that she had teen children, while we had babies and toddlers. Older meant that because she wasn’t in constant “mom motion” she was able to spend more quiet, quality time in the word. Older meant that she had amazing patience and love towards us “we think we know it all” church going young moms.

Older meant that she was a wise mentor to those younger than her – and she took that role as described in Titus 2 to heart and carried it out with sweet God honoring simplicity.

Usually simple is the best way to roll!

I used to admire the way she gently guided and wisely modeled what it meant to be a Godly women, wife, mom, volunteer, Christ-following servant. And more than once I thought – I want to be like her when I am the “older woman.”

What is amazing is that she could have had 100’s, probably 1,000’s sit under her teaching – she was such an excellent teacher. At least that’s how I saw her and how God used her.

She gathered any who wanted to come and discipled right there, where she was, in that little church, in that little town. Her guidance and time spent with us was for our benefit – not her own.

This Titus 2 woman’s obedient, selfless mentoring has reaped long term benefits for family after family, legacy upon legacy. Yet to the world, she is unknown.

Sweet… and I smile, because I “get” that her goal was never to be known by the world, but to be known by her Savior.

To all of the Connie’s out there – thank you. For daily, weekly, monthly, yearly pouring yourself out to invest in those God has placed in your care. You are making disciples who you are equipping to share Jesus in their home, on the play ground, in the community.

When you mentor you model well the One you share with others.

YOUR TURN: WHO HAS BEEN A CONNIE IN YOUR LIFE? WHO DO YOU WANT TO BE LIKE WHEN YOU BECOME THE ‘OLDER WOMAN’?
